1919 BALDWIN The 1919 Baldwin 4-6-2 "pacific", Santa Fe #3415 was moved to its' present location at the Abilene & Smoky Valley Railroad yard in April 1996 from the city park in Abilene where it had spent the last 40 years. #3415 was built in 1919 and was in regular service on Santa Fe's Argentine District out of Kansas City. The railroad donated the locomotive to the city of Abilene in 1954 where it was placed in the city park. In 1996 the city donated it to the Abilene & Smoky Valley where it sat on display until restoration was started in 2005.
This is the only operating steam locomotive in the state of Kansas and is one of three operational, former Santa Few steam locomotives. Plans are that the steamer will operate once a month on weekends on its five mile long track, the former Rock Island line, through the Smoky Hill River valley from Abilene to Enterprise.
Tickets for the steam engine are $30.00 for 12 and older, $15.00 for ages 3-11 and two and younger free for a round trip. Cab rides are $100.00 for a round trip and there will be room for two people at a time. The schedule for the steam engine is May, 28, 29 & 30; July 2, 3 & 4, & July 23 & 24; August 4, 5 & 6; and September 3, 4 & 5; October 1 & 2.
