Check the events tab for days and times. This engine sat in the Eisenhower Park\, Abilene\, Kansas for over 40 years\, having been retired by Santa Fe in the 1950's. The City of Abilene donated the #3415 to the Abilene & Smoky Valley Railroad. It took over four years to restore the engine\, with about 12\,000 volunteer hours and the help of two grants.\n\nMost often the excursion train is operated using the 1945 ALCO S-1\, with it's 660hp diesel-electric engine that was originally designed for WWII submarines. This engine pulls the Abilene & Smoky Valley excursion train\, which includes a 1902 wood KATY passenger car\, converted to a dining car\, two open air gondola cars\, with canopy tops and a caboose\, through the Smoky Hill River Valley.\n\nThe Abilene & Smoky Valley Railroad Association was formed in 1993 as a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation\, dedicated to restoring and operating historic railroad equipment and passing on the history of the rails. \n\nThe railroad is operated by volunteers\, such as the engineers\, crew\, car attendents that narrate every trip\, and depot workers\, as well as mechanical and track maintenance.\n\nA 10 1/2 mile round trip excursion train ride through Smoky Hill River valley from Abilene to Enterprise.
